There is SO much more to POTATO CHIPS than just the taste of it!

Potato chips are worldwide famous snack of majority of people. They are considered a great way to kill our hunger pangs as well as used as the best alternative for snacking. Be it a plan at home to watch a movie with friends or family or be it just gossiping with friends. You will always see potato chips on the table. However, many of us are not aware of the harmful impacts it can have on our health. This blog is all about that. Keep reading!

Empty Calories!

Potatoes chips are known to be empty calories or dense food with very little nutritional value. This term empty calories” means that, the presence of calories is present but there is absolute absence of vital nutrients.

Why we eat? Like generally why do we eat anything at all? One is to enjoy and the other reason is to have the important nutrients in order to survive and live a healthy life. There are some audience that will go with either only reason one or with reason two. However, both reasons are equally important. You need to eat to stay healthy and to enjoy the taste of what you are eating.

Nutritional Value

Potatoes are first washed, blanched and then deep-fried in oil.

The initial process kill most of the antioxidants and the good nutritional value of potatoes. The frying process just makes them high in fat. This fat is mainly the trans-fat that is responsible for obesity, has heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease and diabetes. They could be using cheap oil which is huge amounts of trans-fat. Who knows? That’s not only. After frying, salt is added. We may or may not be able to guess the amount but it is quite.

So, to calculate the amount, deep frying causes high level of fat.  Apart from that, potassium as well as vitamin B5 and B6 are present. Since, they are served either salted or flavored, they have high amount of salt.

Talking about overall energy a packet gives  you is different. However, a standard serving of potato chips is an ounce that has about 153 calories.

Harmful Impacts!

Moving on to the health disadvantages, which I am sure most people were not aware of. I was not and loved munching those extra calories. It did help me gain all that extra weight.

So, the process by which they are made, causes most of the nutrients of potatoes to be lost. Loss of nutrient is not a bad news as much as the addition of by-product is. Yes, during the cooking process, there is a molecule produced known as acrylamide. This has known to be a neurotoxin and responsible for cancer. Acrylamide starts to accumulate in your body that is responsible for the rise of certain diseases.

Acrylamide is a molecule that forms in starchy foods when cooked at higher temperatures. Well, potatoes are famous for being a starchy food.

You might feel these snacks are a good option for you as they cost friendly and makes you full for the time being but they come with high risks. When something puts your health at stake, it is just not worth it.

No one can cut down something they love. At least not, immediately. However, I do recommend you to decrease your amounts of fried items as well as potato chips. As much as you can.
