Sleep Deprivation Leads To Gaining Pounds?
You probably have heard about this and nutritionist telling you
to get a proper amount of sleep is an essential part for losing weight but, have
you considered why is this so?
Before we head in to how hormones
aid in the weight gaining process, let’s look at the basics first.
Eating More Than YOU Planned to.
When you don’t get enough sleep,
you are plausible to eat more.
Have you ever tried all-nighter and bragged
about it when you ace that exam of yours? If yes, then, do you remember after
having cup after cup of coffee or tea or any other beverage, you were snacking something,
maybe a bit or two bites or maybe eating in large quantity.
So, besides being
awake and losing sleep, you tend to gain weight due to over-eating.
Slow Metabolism
Then, in the picture comes your
metabolism. Metabolism tends to slow down or doesn’t work properly as it should
when you are not getting enough sleep. That's how your body works.
Everything works with a certain system like you can't over work on your laptop as eventually the battery gets drained. Even, if you put it on charging, it will start getting hot. It needs a rest period for it to keep working normally.
Hormones Leptin & Ghrelin Roles
So let’s get in to more depth.
Your body has these two nightly hormones called ghrelin and leptin that has an
impact on your weight when you don’t get enough sleep.
Ghrelin is responsible
for the appetite, and it increases when you are sleep deprived. Whereas leptin
is responsible for the satiety, it tells you when you need to stop eating and that
you are full.
However, in cases of sleep- deprivation, leptin amount decreases
in the body. Thus, you are likely to eat lot more than you have planned to and
leading to gaining weight
What does all this mean?
Bottom line is that sleep
deprivation or let’s call it sleep debts is like a credit card debt, you keep
accumulating the debt but in future you will have to pay in large amounts added
the interest rate.
Same is the case with your body, if you keep accumulating
sleep debt, your body is going to crash. Mind it. It’s your body and nobody
will take care of it then YOU.
ONLY YOU.
Remember only this that sleep
deprivation is going to sabotage your body’s health as well as your waistline.
Therefore, sleep on time and for proper duration.
